Demand for power is rapidly increasing due to the fast expansion of the economy. The Government of Mongolia had resolved to carry number of projects in the energy sector which shall ensure sustainable supply of energy, economists say.
Baganuur power plant at concession agreement
Baganuur power plant project shall be carried through concession agreement. The power plant shall supply increasing demand of the central region as well as to provide reliable and sustainable energy.
Exploitation of 700 MW plant to be supplied from Choir Nyalga coal mine shall create new energy source to supply potential demand of Baganuur-Choir district or Dornogovi, Dundgovi, Khentii provinces and ensure reliability. The total project investment is expected to be US$800-900 m.
Buuruljuut plant to pay US$35,5 m a year
An integrated mine and 300 MW power plant shall be implemented at Buuruljuut coal mine, located in the territory of Bayanjargal soum of Tuv province. The project to pay US$35,5 m annually and around US$ 1 billion for lifetime in taxes to the state. The project also shall provide over 300 direct jobs to the Mongolians as well as to ensure local procurement and subcontractors to work for the project.
US$1 billion for financing the Tavantolgoi power plant
Marubeni of Japan was selected to be the investor of the Tavantolgoi power plant. The preliminary investment is around US$ 1 billion. The project shall have a lifetime of 30 years. Around 2000-3000 employees shall be employed by the projects during the construction peak. The current plant is to commission the plant in 2019. The preliminary calculations estimate income of around US$50 m annually. Oyu Tolgoi made a warranty for the power plant.
US$11 billion to be invested in Shivee Energy
One of the projects to be carried by the Government to increase the energy production is Shivee Energy project. The success of the project is expected to bring US$ 11 billion investment to Mongolia.
The scope includes construction of 1300 km long transmission line through Govisumber and Dornogovi provinces along with planned exports of processed coal with added value. 9240 MW power plant shall be constructed as the part of the project, which means the capacity of the new plant is 10 times more than average power plant in Mongolia. The energy “monster” said to be “eat” 34 m tons of coal annually.
