The Parliament had finalized the 2016 election constituencies and election date during the plenary session last Friday (January 29, 016). Ch.Sodnomtseren, head of the General Election committee provided detailed information on election process. Proposals to change the election constituencies’ mandates were actively discussed but at the end the final decision was made to continue with the 2012 election mandates.

48 members shall be elected from 28 constituencies with list of the parties in an accordance of election arrangement based on the votes of total electorates, 14 from Ulaanbaatar and 34 from countryside. The Democratic Party’s proposal to increase the number of members to be elected from Ulaanbaatar failed at the Parliament. Registration of candidates shall be done by the General Election committee instead of constituency committee.

24 parties registered at Supreme Court of Mongolia could participate in the elections, therefore, it is expected that there will be much more candidates from parties along with independently running ones. In 2012 elections, 540 candidates run for the Parliamentary elections and around 2200 run for aimag and UB elections.

Here are some highlights from election process:

- Aimag and UB Council leadership to make a decision on constituencies not later than January 31

-Parties and coalitions to  inform about their decision on participation in elections by April 30, 2016

- Parties and coalitions to start from May 5, 2016 until May 9, 2016 (inclusive) to announce their candidates

-Independent candidates to announce their candidacy between May 5-11, 2016

-The list of the candidates to run for the elections shall be finalized and communicated to the public by May 31, 2016. Candidacy IDs shall be issued by June 7, 2016

-Candidates to officially launch their campaigns starting from June 11/ The campaign period was shortened by the new law as previously candidates to launch their election campaigns after receipt of their candidacy ID/

-Electorates residing outside of Mongolia to vote on June 17-19, 2016 between 7 am to 10 pm

-Elders, bedridden electorates to vote on June 28 between 9 am to 10 m through portable sealed boxes

- Public to vote on June 29, 2016 between 7am to 10 pm
