One of the issues which still remain for Mongolians a standby dream is hydropower plant. Mongolians in need of energy had started discussions on hydropower plant almost 10 years ago with no success. The main opposing side is Russia as it’s much more beneficial to Russia to supply electricity to Mongolia. And Russia is still protesting against the Shuren hydropower plant. And yet pitifully some our movements and civil unions happens to support Russian protest.

Russians openly and secretly being protesting Shuren plant. And this time Russia’s Environmental Ministry made a statement that Russia could stop financing of hydropower plant construction. Nuritdin Inamov, director of International cooperation of the Ministry was stated in media on that. The hydropower plant to be constructed on on Selenge river of Mongolia is financed by the World Bank. Russia protests against hydropower plant to be constructed on rivers which flow to lake Baikal. The sources say that construction of hydropower plants of Shuren and on Orkhon river, largest sleeve of Selenge is temporarily suspended. Russian media mentions here the hydropower plant on Eg river as well. Mr Inamov addressed public council “We are working together with Mongolian side and one of the largest sources of financing World bank as well as International Environment protection association and representatives of UNESCO which provided support to carry out studies and research”. Matter of fact Eg river hydropower plant doesn’t relate to Russia at all as it fed from lake Khuvsgul.  Despite that Russia accuses that the hydropower plant shall have huge impact on environment and tries to create barriers.

Nuritdin Inamov met with representatives of World Bank almost three weeks ago to determine the feasibility of projects carried by Ministry of Environment of Russia (likely three hydropower plant projects). And the Ministry officials to be arriving to Mongolian on May 20 to let Mongolian side understand to give up the projects. Mr Inamov added “We have received a letter from Washington on temporary suspension of the projects. They listen to us. Now we are willing the World bank representatives to visit republic of Buryatia and Irkitsk region to listen to opinions of public”

Russians are very much proud to report their achievements to protest Mongolia’s hydropower plant projects.
