Disclosure of offshore accounts creates chaos with upcoming elections

Release of Panama papers on May 9, 14.00 ETD perhaps made some Mongolians to spend uneasy night as the Mongolian media was watching closely and yet Mongol HD even made a short story yesterday (May 9, 2016) disclosing names of three people said to be obtained from ICIJ, ex-Prime Minister Su.Batbold (served 2009-2012 ), ex Construction and Urban Development Minister D.Tsogtbaatar and owner of Petrovis, Mongolia’s top petroleum retail company, J.Oyungerel, however, names of first two didn’t appear on the list which makes the public to suspect some politicization around the issue with upcoming elections.

Early today morning, most of the Mongolian websites were filled with stories including lists of individuals holding offshore accounts. For the search of Mongolia, 49 entries in total were listed.

Following the release, Mongolian society started talking and sharing the stories appeared. The most popular entries are apparently related to Bat-Uul Chuluudai, son of current UB Mayor who is recorded to be a shareholder of Strategic Mines Inc registered at British Virginia Islands and Davaa Batbayar, ex-sumo wrestler and ex MP.

Meanwhile, ex PM and ex Minister of CUD organized a press conference at which both claimed that they have no any offshore accounts, however Su.Batbold accepted that his brother Sukhbaatar Bat-Ochir is included in the disclosed list. Many people see their press conference as a defense step as both of them are said to run for Parliamentary elections on June 29, 2016.

Comments and feedbacks are just streaming into Facebook and Twitter, exchange of opinions and much more.
