Oyu Tolgoi remains committed to a Mongolian domestic power solution

2018/02/19

Oyu Tolgoi today reiterated its commitment to developing a domestic power solution for Mongolia after the Government withdrew its support for the Tavan Tolgoi Power Project.

Oyu Tolgoi has been working with the Government since 2014 on a long-term domestic power option, including a study to determine the viability of the Tavan Tolgoi Power Project (TTPP) and a 220 kV power distribution line to deliver electricity to the mine. However, with the Government’s cancellation of the Southern Region Power Sector Cooperation Agreement (PSCA) today, they have indicated they no longer view this project as an option.

The Government’s cancellation of the PSCA triggers the start a four-year window for Oyu Tolgoi to develop an alternative power option, including the possible construction of a site-based power plant.

Oyu Tolgoi remains dedicated to developing a domestic power solution and to fulfilling all of its commitments under the 2009 Investment Agreement.

Armando Torres, CEO of Oyu Tolgoi, said, “Finding a power solution that works for the long-term needs of Oyu Tolgoi and honoring our commitment to source power from Mongolia is paramount. We will continue to work with the Government of Mongolia and all stakeholders to develop the best option.”
